US President Donald Trump asserts that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has responded to his proposals, despite recent missile tests and criticism regarding the reduction of joint military exercises with South Korea.

US President Donald Trump has stated that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un responded to his initiatives following Washington's decision to scale back joint military exercises with South Korea. Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump confirmed that Kim had reached out, adding, "Kim Jong Un has always treated me with great respect. We have met, talked, and spent time together. I understand him, and he understands me."

Trump emphasized that he believes reducing the exercises makes the situation "much safer" for South Korea. This statement came just days after North Korea conducted a test launch of ballistic missiles.

The president's decision has drawn criticism from Republican Senator Thom Tillis. On X (formerly Twitter), Tillis expressed concern, noting that South Korea has been a reliable military ally for over 70 years. He argued that scaling back joint drills is counterproductive, especially as military officials from both nations warn that Kim's regime is gaining new combat experience—including drone tactics—by assisting Russia in the conflict in Ukraine.

Beyond the North Korean agenda, Trump addressed reports concerning the USS Abraham Lincoln, denying media claims of food shortages on board, and discussed Iran's nuclear program, stating that Tehran "wants to make a deal, but not on the terms I consider necessary."

During the press conference, the president also blamed "vandals" for damaging the lawns on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., following Fourth of July celebrations. However, documents and photographic evidence suggest the damage is consistent with the placement of stages and event infrastructure rather than acts of vandalism as the president claimed.

Additionally, the US Supreme Court has rejected another attempt by Trump to challenge a jury verdict in the sexual abuse and defamation case brought by writer E. Jean Carroll. While the former president has already paid $5.6 million in one related judgment, he continues to contest a separate ruling involving an $83.3 million award.
