The United States and Canada have reached an agreement to avert the imposition of steep tariffs on billions of dollars worth of Canadian goods, US President Donald Trump announced.
The announcement came shortly before midnight, just as the deadline was set to expire for a 50 percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian exports. The restrictions could have affected electronics, industrial machinery, furniture, and dairy products.
Writing on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that the implementation of the 50 percent tariffs has been suspended for three days as the parties have reached a deal that is currently undergoing final documentation.
In addition, the US president mentioned the Keystone XL pipeline project, which was previously halted by Joe Biden, and raised the possibility of restarting its operations.
