AI startup Cursor, which officially became part of SpaceXAI, has announced the launch of Origin, a new code hosting platform. The service is designed for core developer workflows, including project collaboration, code viewing and editing, pull request management, and repository storage.
Until now, Cursor focused on providing automated web development services through its AI code editor. Origin plans to integrate AI agent-driven features and build an app ecosystem. However, switching to Origin does not require abandoning GitHub: developers can link accounts, synchronize repositories, and transfer code between both systems.
The release of Origin coincided with another major GitHub outage that lasted over six hours, causing global error rates of around 20%. According to research by LeadDev, GitHub experienced 257 outages over the past year, driving a exodus of several high-profile users.
Despite these disruptions, GitHub remains the largest source code host, with approximately 180 million developers as of last October. Founded in 2007, the service was acquired by Microsoft in 2012.
