Johann Wadephul, a foreign policy expert for the German CDU/CSU parliamentary group, has dismissed recent threats made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov as "absurd propaganda." The politician made these remarks in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung on August 18.
According to Wadephul, the Kremlin is resorting to threats and disinformation to distract from the economic and social challenges caused by the ongoing war in Ukraine. He emphasized that international support for Kyiv remains steadfast, regardless of Moscow's rhetoric.
Lavrov had previously stated that Russia intends to toughen its approach toward Western nations providing military aid to Ukraine. These statements have caused concern within the German government, particularly following the discovery of an incendiary device at Leipzig Airport on August 5, an incident that U.S. intelligence officials have linked to Russian operatives.
